Bern — A city shaped by the river
Bern is a city best taken slowly. Its UNESCO-listed old town is made for wandering: under long arcades, past quiet courtyards, independent shops and sandstone facades that seem to hold the day at their own pace. From the Zytglogge to the Bundeshaus, culture is never far away — but neither is a good lunch, a small boutique, or a shaded place by the river.
In summer, bring your swimming suits. The Marzili sits just below the Bundeshaus and is one of Bern’s most beloved rituals: a dip in the Aare, a moment on the grass, then the little Marzilibahn back up to the city. The river is cold, fast and strictly for confident swimmers — but for many, it is the most Bernese way to see Bern.
Come for shopping, lunch, galleries, history, or simply a change of rhythm. Bern is close enough for an easy day out from The Brecon, and different enough to feel like a small journey. Then back to Adelboden, where the mountains take over again.
