The High Plateau, Season by Season
Engstligenalp is never quite the same twice. In spring, summer, autumn and winter, the plateau shifts with the season — wide, open and quietly spectacular, with the Engstligen Falls as its constant.
Before taking the gondola up, make time for the Waterfall Walk. It is one of Adelboden’s great natural moments, and often at its most powerful when the snow begins to melt. The walk is possible beyond the main season too. In summer, those looking for a more ambitious route can head up on foot beside the falls, or take the via ferrata for the closest views.
Once on the alp, visit the alpine cheese dairy, or settle into the Raclette Hut, tucked inside a former cowshed, for something simple, warm and very real.
Early June brings the Alpaufzug, the traditional ascent of the cows to the alpine pastures — an early start, but a rare and memorable experience.
In winter, Engstligenalp becomes a smaller, quieter ski area for alpine and cross-country skiing. Snow stays late here, with skiing often possible into the beginning of May.
